Sodium Benzoate

INCI: Sodium Benzoate

Function: Preservative

Benefits: Inhibits growth of fungus and bacteria

The Science: Sodium Benzoate is the salt form of benzoic acid, commonly used as a preservative in skincare formulations. It effectively inhibits the growth of microorganisms, acting as both an anti-fungal and antibacterial agent. Naturally found in fruits like peaches, watermelon, bananas, and strawberries, as well as in spices like cayenne pepper and mustard seeds, Sodium Benzoate helps maintain the safety and integrity of skincare products. It is produced by neutralizing benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide.

The Story: Sodium Benzoate is a preservative often used in combination with Potassium Sorbate to effectively protect skincare formulations from microbial growth and extend product shelf life.
